ASME IX · AWS D1.1Welding
ASME IX & AWS D1.1 — American welding codes
What is it?
The US counterparts to EN rules: ASME Section IX qualifies welders and procedures for boilers, pressure vessels and piping (WPQ per QW-484); AWS D1.1 governs structural steel (D1.2 aluminium, D1.6 stainless). Many oil & gas and shipyard projects in Europe run on these codes.
What evidence should a candidate have?
WPQ records with positions (3G/4G/6G), thickness ranges and continuity confirmations — ASME papers expire without ongoing practice.
Why it matters for staffing
A welder holding both EN ISO 9606 and ASME/AWS papers can be placed on European AND American-code projects — double the market, premium rates.
