How to verify a Metal fabricator CV — official standards

Metal fabricator CVs (ISCO 7214, structural-metal preparers and erectors) are hard to read at face value. Titles differ by country — NPK Ključavničar in Slovenia, Metallbauer – Konstruktionstechnik in Germany, fitter or fabricator in English-speaking markets — and most candidates describe tasks rather than the standards they worked to.

The standards themselves are concrete: EN 1090-2 for execution and fit-up of steel structures, EN ISO 13920 for welded-structure tolerances, ISO 2768 with ISO 22081 for general tolerances, EN ISO 9013 for thermal cut quality, EN ISO 9692 for joint preparation and EN ISO 2553 for weld symbols on drawings. A rigorous check maps each CV claim to one of these, then asks for the document behind it. WorkerProof does that automatically and verifies every CV three times.

What a strong CV must contain

Execution class under EN 1090-2

The CV should state which execution classes (EXC1–EXC4) the candidate has worked in and on what kind of components. EN 1090-2 governs execution and fit-up, so an EXC2 workshop background is a different profile from EXC4 bridge or stadium work.

Drawing reading to EN ISO 2553

Look for an explicit statement that the candidate reads weld symbols to EN ISO 2553 — weld type, size, length, field welds, finishing. Reading them independently is the line between a fabricator and a supervised helper.

Tolerances: EN ISO 13920 and ISO 2768

A strong CV names the tolerance classes it worked to: EN ISO 13920 for welded structures, ISO 2768 (with ISO 22081) for general tolerances, and where relevant fits to ISO 286 or GD&T to ISO 1101.

Cutting and joint preparation evidence

Ask for the cutting processes used (plasma, oxy-fuel, laser) and the quality grade achieved under EN ISO 9013, plus joint preparation to EN ISO 9692 — angles, gaps and root faces that decide weld quality before the arc starts.

Vocational qualification and EQF level

The CV should name the qualification and issuing country: NPK Ključavničar (SI), Metallbauer – Konstruktionstechnik (DE), fitter/fabricator (EN). EQF levels 1–8 place these on one comparable scale — a German Geselle sits at EQF 4, a Meister at EQF 6.

Documented shop-floor skills

Expect concrete ESCO-level tasks: use safety equipment in construction, interpret 3D plans, tend a metal sawing machine, operate handheld riveting equipment, and corrosion work such as rust removal and operating a rust-proofing spray gun.

⚠️ Red flags to watch for

"Steel construction experience" with no execution classA CV that claims structural steel work but never mentions EN 1090-2 or an execution class (EXC1–EXC4) leaves the workshop discipline and CE-marking context unverified. Ask which class the shop actually worked to.
Drawings mentioned, weld symbols not"Works from technical drawings" without any reference to EN ISO 2553 weld symbols or to interpreting 3D plans usually means supervised work. It matters if the role requires independent fit-up from a drawing.
No tolerance language anywhereIf the CV never names EN ISO 13920, ISO 2768/22081, ISO 286 fits or ISO 1101 geometric tolerancing, precision claims are unsupported. Tolerances are the measurable part of a fabricator's output.
Cutting machines listed without quality gradesPlasma, oxy-fuel or laser cutting listed as a bare skill, with no EN ISO 9013 cut-quality grade and no EN ISO 9692 joint preparation, says nothing about edge quality handed over to welding.
Job title instead of a qualification document"Locksmith" or "fabricator" as a self-declared title, with no NPK, vocational diploma, Geselle/Meister certificate or EQF level, cannot be checked. Request the issuing body and the document itself.

Questions to ask the candidate

  1. 01Which EN 1090-2 execution classes (EXC1–EXC4) have you worked in, and what components did you fabricate or erect in each?
  2. 02Take this drawing: read the EN ISO 2553 weld symbols aloud — weld type, size, length, and which welds are field welds.
  3. 03Which tolerance classes to EN ISO 13920 did your welded assemblies have to meet, and where did ISO 2768 or ISO 22081 general tolerances apply?
  4. 04Which thermal cutting processes have you run, what EN ISO 9013 cut quality was required, and how did you prepare joints to EN ISO 9692 (angle, gap, root face)?
  5. 05What is your vocational qualification, which body issued it, and at which EQF level does it sit (for example NPK, Geselle EQF 4, Meister EQF 6)?

Frequently asked questions

Which standards should a Metal fabricator CV reference?

For fabrication and assembly: EN 1090-2 (execution, fit-up) and EN ISO 13920 (welded-structure tolerances), plus ISO 2768 with ISO 22081 for general tolerances. For cutting and preparation: EN ISO 9013 (thermal cut quality), EN ISO 9692 (joint preparation) and EN ISO 2553 (weld symbols on drawings).

How do I compare a Slovenian NPK with a German Metallbauer qualification?

Use the European Qualifications Framework (EQF, levels 1–8), which makes national diplomas comparable on one scale — a German Geselle sits at EQF 4, a Meister at EQF 6. WorkerProof checks the documents and the claims on the CV; it does not grant or confirm legal recognition of a qualification.

What does EN 1090 mean for hiring decisions?

EN 1090 covers execution of steel structures with execution classes EXC1 (simple) to EXC4 (bridges, stadiums) and governs CE marking of steel components and the required workshop discipline. Matching the candidate's execution-class experience to your own work is more informative than a job title.

How can I tell whether a candidate really reads technical drawings?

Test it directly: EN ISO 2553 defines weld type, size, length, field welds and finishing, and reading those symbols independently is the boundary between a welder/fitter and a supervised helper. Combine it with interpreting 3D plans and the tolerance callouts under ISO 2768, ISO 286 and ISO 1101.

What does WorkerProof actually verify, and how often?

WorkerProof checks trade-worker CVs against the official EU/ISO standards matrix for the trade — for ISCO 7214 that means EN 1090-2, EN ISO 13920, ISO 2768/22081, EN ISO 9013, EN ISO 9692 and EN ISO 2553 — plus the stated vocational qualification and EQF level. Every CV is verified three times. WorkerProof verifies documents and claims, nothing more.
