How to verify a Vehicle mechanic CV — official standards

Vehicle mechanic CVs (ISCO 7231, motor vehicle mechanics and repairers) are hard to assess because the job title says little about what the candidate is actually allowed and trained to do. One applicant services brakes and bodywork, another opens de-energised high-voltage systems or recovers refrigerant from air-conditioning circuits — activities tied to specific certificates, not to years of experience.

A rigorous check separates three layers: the vocational qualification (Kfz-Mechatroniker in Germany, NPK avtoserviser in Slovenia, placed on the EQF scale), the mandatory certificates (Reg. (EC) 307/2008 for MAC refrigerant work, DGUV Info 209-093 levels S–3S for EV/hybrid work, Reg. (EU) 165/2014 for tachograph workshops) and the documented skills. WorkerProof verifies each CV three times against this matrix; we verify documents and claims, not legal recognition.

What a strong CV must contain

Vocational qualification with EQF placement

Look for a named vocational qualification — Kfz-Mechatroniker (DE) or NPK avtoserviser (SI) — and its EQF level, so a German Geselle (EQF 4) or Meister (EQF 6) can be compared with a Slovenian diploma on one scale.

MAC refrigerant training attestation

If the CV mentions air-conditioning service, it must reference a training attestation under Regulation (EC) 307/2008 (Directive 2006/40/EC). These attestations are mutually recognised across member states, so the issuing country matters less than the document itself.

High-voltage level stated explicitly

For electric and hybrid work, the CV should name the DGUV Info 209-093 level: S/E (awareness), 1S/1E (supervised work), 2S/2E (work on de-energised HV systems) or 3S/3E (live HV components and batteries).

Tachograph workshop authorisation

Claims about tachograph calibration or sealing belong to workshops authorised under Regulation (EU) 165/2014. The CV should show where the candidate performed this work and under which workshop authorisation.

Diagnostics and OEM trainings named

Expect concrete diagnostics experience — OBD, factory testers — plus manufacturer (OEM) trainings with the brand and year, rather than a generic line such as 'computer diagnostics'.

Safety and hazardous substances procedures

Strong CVs show applied health and safety standards and control of substances hazardous to health procedures, alongside the technical core: types of vehicles, mechanical components of vehicles, repairs and maintenance of vehicle bodies, and customer information related to repairs.

⚠️ Red flags to watch for

'EV experience' without a DGUV levelHigh-voltage work is graded from S to 3S under DGUV Info 209-093. A CV claiming hybrid or electric repairs without naming a level gives you no way to know whether the candidate may work on de-energised systems, let alone live HV components.
A/C service with no 307/2008 attestationRecovering refrigerant from vehicle air-conditioning under Directive 2006/40/EC requires a training attestation. Air-conditioning tasks listed without any reference to Regulation (EC) 307/2008 need to be clarified before interview.
Tachograph work outside an authorised workshopIf tachograph calibration appears but no authorised workshop under Regulation (EU) 165/2014 is named, the claim cannot be traced to any authorisation.
Job title instead of qualification'Car mechanic, 12 years' with no vocational qualification, no EQF level and no Geselle/Meister or NPK reference leaves the formal training level unverifiable.
OEM trainings without brand, year or issuerManufacturer trainings are documented by certificate. A generic 'various OEM courses' line, with no brand, year or issuing training centre, cannot be checked against any document.

Questions to ask the candidate

  1. 01Which vocational qualification do you hold — Kfz-Mechatroniker, NPK avtoserviser or another — and at which EQF level (for example Geselle EQF 4 or Meister EQF 6)?
  2. 02Do you hold a training attestation under Regulation (EC) 307/2008 for recovering refrigerant from vehicle air-conditioning, and in which member state was it issued?
  3. 03Which DGUV Info 209-093 level do you hold — S/E, 1S/1E, 2S/2E or 3S/3E — and what HV tasks did you actually perform at that level?
  4. 04Have you worked in a workshop authorised under Regulation (EU) 165/2014 for tachographs, and what was your own role in that work?
  5. 05Which factory testers and OBD systems do you use, and which manufacturer (OEM) trainings can you document with certificate and year?

Frequently asked questions

Which certificates are mandatory for a vehicle mechanic in the EU?

According to the standards matrix verified in 07/2026, three apply depending on the tasks: Regulation (EC) 307/2008 for MAC refrigerant training under Directive 2006/40/EC, DGUV Info 209-093 for high-voltage vehicle qualification (levels S–3S), and Regulation (EU) 165/2014 for tachograph workshops. Which ones a candidate needs depends on the work you assign.

Is a German A/C training attestation valid in another member state?

Attestations issued under Regulation (EC) 307/2008 are mutually recognised across member states. WorkerProof checks that the document exists and matches the claim on the CV; we do not decide on legal recognition of qualifications.

How do I compare a Slovenian NPK with a German Geselle?

The European Qualifications Framework (EQF, levels 1–8) makes national diplomas comparable: a Slovenian NPK or vocational diploma, a German Geselle (EQF 4) or Meister (EQF 6) can be placed on one scale across the EU. That gives you a common reference point when screening international applicants.

What does the DGUV 209-093 level actually tell me?

It defines the scope of permitted high-voltage work: S/E means awareness, 1S/1E supervised work, 2S/2E work on de-energised HV systems, and 3S/3E work on live HV components and batteries. Match the level to the EV and hybrid tasks in your workshop.

How does WorkerProof verify a vehicle mechanic CV?

Each CV is checked against the official standards matrix for ISCO 7231 — the mandatory certificates and the vocational route (Kfz-Mechatroniker, NPK avtoserviser, OEM trainings, diagnostics) — plus ESCO skills for vehicle technicians. Every CV is verified three times, and the result documents claims and documents only.
