How to verify a Pipefitter CV — official standards

A Pipefitter / Industrial fitter CV (ISCO 7126) is difficult to assess from job titles alone. "Pipe installation", "prefabrication" or "pressure piping" can mean anything from bolting flanges under supervision to fabricating and testing systems under EN 13480 and PED 2014/68/EU. The details that decide suitability — material group, welding process, position, pressure test records — usually sit in attachments, not in the text.

The standards that frame this trade are concrete: EN 13480 for metallic industrial piping (part 5 for testing), PED 2014/68/EU for pressure equipment, EN 1090 for steel assembly and EN ISO 9606 where welding is involved. What a strong CV must contain

Piping scope tied to EN 13480

The CV should state which parts of metallic industrial piping the candidate actually worked on — fabrication, installation or testing — and reference EN 13480, including -5 for pressure tests. Generic "pipe work" without the standard tells you nothing about the pressure class handled.

Pressure equipment context under PED

Where the work involved equipment under pressure, look for a mention of PED 2014/68/EU and the type of installation (piping, vessels per EN 13445 / ASME VIII). This shows whether the candidate has worked in a regime with legal conformity requirements and notified-body oversight.

Welder qualification per EN ISO 9606

If the CV claims welding, an EN ISO 9606 certificate must be attached with process (e.g. TIG 141, MAG 135), material group per ISO/TR 15608, thickness, diameter and position per EN ISO 6947. Each certificate covers exactly what was tested and needs regular revalidation.

Steel assembly and execution class

For structural supports, racks and steelwork, the CV should reference EN 1090 and the execution class (EXC1–EXC4) worked to. Execution class indicates the level of workshop discipline and documentation the candidate is used to.

Drawing literacy: isometrics, P&ID, weld symbols

Look for explicit statements about reading isometrics and P&IDs, technical drawings and weld symbols per EN ISO 2553. Independent reading of these documents separates a fitter from a supervised helper.

Site and safety evidence

Pressure test records the candidate contributed to, plus heights, confined space or BOSIET certificates, should be listed with issue dates. Directive 2009/104/EC requires documented training before workers use equipment such as ladders, scaffolds or MEWPs.

"Welding certificate" with no parametersA claim of welding qualification without process, material group, thickness, diameter and position is unverifiable. Under EN ISO 9606 a certificate covers exactly what was tested — nothing more.
Expired or undated certificatesEN ISO 9606 and EN ISO 13585 qualifications must be revalidated regularly, and ISO 9712 NDT certification has strict recertification rules. Undated scans or lapsed validity mean the candidate cannot be deployed on qualified work today.
Pressure piping claimed, no test evidenceIf the CV says pressure piping but never mentions pressure test records or EN 13480-5, the involvement may have been limited to handling and bolting. Testing is where the fitter's work is proven.
Standards mixed up or misattributedCiting ASME IX or AWS D1.1 as if they were welder qualifications for EN piping, or naming EN 1090 for piping instead of steel assembly, signals copied wording. Codes are used side by side on many projects, but they are not interchangeable.
